 | | | Posted: 06/02/07 | | 'CLEAR, ARTICULATE, NEED CAREFUL PAIRING' | | Strengths: Dispersion of soundfield Sweet treble Punchy midrange | | Weaknesses: A touch brash on timing lower order Pairing with warm electronics is essential Not quite articulate enough to shine as a centre | | Overall: System Setup: Arcam DiVA A300, Musical Fidelity X3 CD, Arcam DiVA DV139, Jamo X3M10 L/R, Gallo Due C/RL/RR
I use a total of three Dues at the moment, two in the rear, and one for centre channel, while I muster up the necessaries for a Reference 3 centre.
I fell in love with Gallo's style and sense of sound from the moment I first saw and heard the Reference III, so was determined to style the main listening room around them. One listen was enough... These are extraordinary surround speakers. Positioned slightly above and behind the listening position, with the dispersal on the horizontal plane (albeit slightly downwardly angled) the rear soundstage is utterly absorbing, with rear effects swooping across, and a tremendous of being in the thick of it.
I mention above that warm electronics are a must; I used to have the Dues partnered with MF kit, the combination of which was a little too clinical for my taste. Equally, I can recognise that the Jamos are the current weak link, but until ERNIE lets me in reach of the Reference 3.1s, they'll do.
The only downside to the Dues is the lack of articulation as a centre. At this price, I would have expected a touch more authority with the dialogue, especially considering how effective they are with the midrange elsewhere.
And with music? So far, these little marvels have been right on the money with anything thrown at them, from Emiliana Torrini's frail voice to the thundering wall of sound of Fields of the Nephilim. Clear, crisp, well articulated, and provided they're not asked to take on too much of the bass grunt work, they can take on anything.
My one problem so far has been an attack by the dogs on the wire, which I hadn't finished installing into the wall, and one tug pulled not the wires loose, but the binding posts from the speaker (not cheap to repair)... which loses somewhat on the build quality. A final niggle, that the black anodised metal looks beautiful, but once you take the grilles off, simply applying the alun key to the socket is enough to create little shiny streaks. But, since they pass the wife test, and they sound so good, I can let these little things ride. Now, how long until the Reference Centre can join them? |
