Strengths: Dead handy for off-air recording and making your own compilations. Easy to use
Weaknesses: A little expensive given you can buy a PC for the same that will do all this and more.
Overall: If you just want to make CD compilations this may be over the top. Then again, it is, as CD recorder/players go, a very good one. But where it really shines is in recording long items, for example a radio broadcast of which you don't necessarily want the whole lot. So record the lot, find the bit you want later and dump it to CDR for safe-keeping. It's _much_ nicer to use than a PC, very versatile, and QUALITY.
Strengths: Ease of use. No compression. Copies produced by this machine are legal due to the use of CD-R Audio blanks.Radio can be recorded very easily to the HD and edited later without waste of blanks. Superfast method of duplicating CD's. Can use Yamaha's high quality S.Q.M.S. system for writng CDs.
Weaknesses: Uses SCMS copy protection, hence only CD R Audio discs can be used. Editing recordings on the Hard disc takes a while due to the lack of a fast search function.
Overall: I agree that one can use a computer to perform the functions of this machine, however I would not wish to connect a mains powered computer to my delicate Hi-Fi equipment. Also those devices that are available tend to rely on low quality connections, such as minijack plugs which are likely to degrade the audio quality. I have also used this machine to copy many LPs, results are excellent. This machine produces results that are vastly superior to minidisc, preusmably due to the lack of compression.
