| 'A GOOD PERFORMER WHICH LACKS WARMTH' | | Strengths: Excellent processor, Good Stereo, Lots of usable features | | Weaknesses: Lacks warmth in the center and front speakers | | Overall: A good reciever loaded with numerous features in this price range. But it lacks warmth and authority in Center and front speakers |

| 'TOP QUALITY SOUND' | | Strengths: Audio processing | | Weaknesses: Poor menu system | | Overall: I've got this amp wired up to Quad 22L's and Quad centre with Kef Q55's on the rear back and KEf65DS Dipoles on the surrounds. After the easy inital system setup using the supplied microphone, i turned my sights to the two channel pure direct mode. This is when things went slightly wrong...why Denon don't you make the amp do what it says in TWO CHANNEL PURE DIRECT and not two channel with subwoofer and video processing still switched on!!! To add insult to injury , when the subwoofer is deactived in the menu, it deactives it for all input sources.....even the DVD input that's always going to use the sub!.
I don't want to do this unit down too much as this is the only problem i've found. To be honest the sound quality i'm getting from this setup is just astounding, and more than makes up for having to constantly turn the sub on and off. The back rear channel really does bring true cinema sound to the home, especially with Digital ES 6.1 soundtracks. Even with a matrixed back channel the augmentation of the sound field is stunning. Steven King's Rose Red being a good DVD to demo this with. All in all if you want top notch two channel (although fiddly to configure) as well and excellent 6.1/7.1 sound then I would totally recommend it. |

| 'FANTASTIC' | | Strengths: Sound, flexibility, processing | | Weaknesses: None whatsoever in my configuration | | Overall: I use this in 5.0 (i.e no subwoofer) configuration driving Monitor Audio Silver 8i fronts and Silver 10i centre, with Mourdaunt Short MS20i Pearls as rears. With movies it is excellent, bags of power but used well, placement is the best I've heard even without a surround back speaker, and in my room (33' x 16')there's more than enough bass without a sub. However, my primary reason for going for the Denon is the ability to use 4 of the 7 power amps to bi-amp my front pair (if you need details of how to do this drop me a line). In this configuration music sounds just awesome. I have an old Pioneer CD player which I just use as a transport (connected to the amp using coax thus using the 16 top end DAC's on the amp for D/A conversion).
Overall this amp provides the ideal blend of music and movies - I can't reccomend it highly enough. |
