'VERY GOOD PVR, SUPERB PICTURE QUALITY, EASY TO USE'
Strengths:
- Excellent PVR functionality
- Large 80GB hard disc
- Superb picture quality
- Digital audio output
Weaknesses:
- No twin tuner (you can't watch one channel while recording another)
- No cam slot, so not tup-up TV
- Display doesn't show channel names
- Fan noise
Overall:
The set-up process is very easy: Just connect the PVR to the mains and your aerial and it will store all available channels automatically. You can edit, group and delete them afterwards if you need to.
The picture quality is very good indeed - but this depends on the signal you receive. The tuner of the Humax delivers good results even when your reception isn't very strong.
The EPG function is easy to use and the internal hard disc is big enough to store many hours of recordings. I also like the "pause live TV" and "rewind live TV" functions you don't get from cheap set-top boxes without a hard disc. Once you've got this box you start recording everything because it's so easy...
The only two things I'm not absolutely satisfied with are the inbuilt display and the fan noise. The display only shows the channel number. I'd rather have it to show the full channel name instead. A dot-matrix display would also be much better to look at. The fan noise doesn’t really disturb while watching TV. But when you just record a programme without watching it at the same time, the fan can be a bit annoying.
Conclusion: The Humax is a very good PVR that offers a lot of great functionality, a very good picture quality and a nice design (except the display) as well. It's also reasonable priced.
