'Slim and stylish with great sound quality'

Strengths:
I have been using this model for almost a year without any problems. It is a 'full digital' amplifier (if that floats your boat) so any analogue inputs are converted to digital before being amplified.

I find the sound quality very good - a real step up from the (highly rated) Denon it replaced in my system.

It has plenty of inputs that can be configured to taste - a analogue and digital device can share a single input designation - for instance, you can attach your Minidisc digital output and your cassette deck analogue output to 'share' the 'Tape' position and the amp will automatically switch between them. Very handy if you have a lot of legacy analogue sources.

Stereo sound quality is good, with fine left/right image spread and placement but limited depth. The Dolby Prologic II and DTS Neo:6 decoders work superbly well with stereo recordings.

Bass quality is a real strength, with plenty of depth and impact without any overhang. Mid and treble quality are fine at reasonable volumes but the treble can get harsh if you push the volume to far.

Full blown Dolby Digital and DTS 6.1 cinema sound is excellent, with very clear dialogue and effect steering.

Being a digital amp, it runs very cool, even when driven hard.

The remote is comprehensive and fairly easy to use (it also works other pre-programmed brands of equipment) but lacks a true backlight.

Weaknesses:
Not nearly as powerful as the 100 watt per channel spec suggests. The sound hardens up considerably in the treble if you push it very hard - but that said, it drives my 85dB/w speakers to neighbour annoying volumes before the sound becomes unacceptably harsh.

It has a strip of awful bright blue illumination across the main display, but thankfully this can be turned off.

Overall:
I have been very pleased with this unit and have not found anything as flexible that sounds nearly as good at the price.

I believe it has now been replaced by the SA-XR50 which if the specs are anything to go is a marginally improved version in a slightly different case...
