| 'EXCELLENT - DOES WHAT IT IS SUPPOSED TO DO WELL.' | | Strengths: Works as it is supposed to | | Weaknesses: Some equipment won't allow the "auto source select" function to work - but you can always select it manually. | | Overall: I've recently purchased a Pioneer 435XDE - and the only problem with it is that the lip sync. This is because the plasma takes a few milliseconds to draw the picture on the screen, and so the sound happens before the picture. Some AV amps have a feature to delay the sound (to marry the two back up) - some dont. Enter the DD540 - an accessory to add this feature to your system.
Initial impression of the DD540 is good - a very small brushed aluminium box (not much bigger than a pack of cigarettes), with 5 connections on the back. Optical and coaxial in, optical and coaxial out, and power in. This box allows you to delay two digital sources - typically a sky box and a DVD player.
I connected the optical out of my Pioneer 435XDE freeview screen to the optical input, and the coax out of my Harman Kardon DVD25 to the coax input. Both outputs to to my AV amp.
Switch on the box, and it does what it says on the tin - with no loss of quality. The tiny remote control is used to select the source (or leave it on auto mode) - and it sets the delay. The delay for each input is remembered when you move to the other input, and restored when you switch back again. Clever.
You can program 6 memories with 6 different delay times (in milliseconds) - but I didn't explore this function. Once I had it set as I liked it, I left it be. 50ms is about right.
The only issue I had with the box is that the auto switching didn't work perfectly for me. My sources continued to output some kind of signal - even when I switched it over to a new input (e.g. from freeview to DVD) - so I had to use the remote to switch it to the other input. This switching can be controlled via a pronto - you can donwload the remote codes for various remotes from the website.
To sum up - an excellent accessory that does what it says on the tin - and does it very well. Recommended. |
