'RELIABILITY PROBLEMS'
Strengths:
Feature rich.
Well designed screen layout.
Flexible.
The recording facility.

[Update 22/08/06] Flexible

Weaknesses:
You can only record a single day's recordings on the SD card.
Interface can be slow.
£200 is slightly too expensive.
The supplied 32mb card is too small. Buy a bigger one immediately.
A Tivoli sounds better.

[Update 22/08/06] Really the Pure Evoke 3 has beaten it. It broke because of software problems.

Overall:
I'm pleased with this unit. It does most of what I need. The sound is acceptable and it has the record facility which is absent on most DAB radios. It's flexible and also has a digital out so that I can get a decent sound when played through my main system.

There are some areas where it doesn't quite come up to scratch though. A Tivoli sounds clearly better and is better made.

The recording facility only allows you to record one day's programming; if you need a second day's recording (if you are on hols for instance) it will record over the first day's programmes. This is a key design error.

The most interesting thing for me was what I heard through the headphone socket which cruelly exposed DAB quality on low bitrate stations. The sound through the mono speaker is voiced to hide these shortcomings as far as possible. At times it can lean towards being too warm when tone controls are set flat.

build quality could be better. It would also be good to have these features in a more traditional wood and leather Roberts design. The buttons are not very good and the user interface needs more work.

Overall, for what it is, it's pretty good and for flexibility, it doesn't have much competition.

[Update 22/08/06] It was competitive 18 months ago but now the recommendation would be to buy the Pure Evoke 3 which has better quality and allows you to record more than one event without overwriting what is on the memory card.
