'Great picture and great value!'
Strengths:
160GB hard disc - who needs DVD's?
Great picture quality.
Easy to set-up and to use.
Good connectivity options.
Intstructions are very clear.
Weaknesses:
Fan can be audible - IF you listen for it.
Instructions in English have to be downloaded, and it's 116 pages!
Overall:
The recording quality right up to and including EP is amazing. That is (for example) 4 hours onto a DVD, and it can do up to 8! The longer you go, obviously the "grainier" the picture. It has more editing functions than I will probably ever use, including "Merge" and "Divide".
I see that a multi-region hack is available through a rented handset, if you need that option.
So, if you don't want or need a digital-tuner version (due September) but you DO need a "VCR" replacement, for the money at the moment this is a great choice.

'An amazing recorder!'
Strengths:
Multi-format capability; connectivity options; easy to use; great picture and thus EXCELLENT-quality recordings.
Weaknesses:
Are there any? None that I found yet in day-to-day "video-recorder" use!
Apart from ...... finding & downloading the user manual in English. 116 pages! Ohhhh!!!!
Overall:
Firstly, this is FOR ME a "VHS" replacement. I use a separate DVD player for "serious" movie-watching.
Okay?
Then, onwards: The recording quality onto both DVD and hard disk is amazing, right up to the (still very watchable) Extended Play mode which gives 4 hours on DVD! SLP (6 hours) and Super Extended Long Play (8 hours) show more artifacts but remain watchable, but with 160GB and the option to save to DVD who'll use them? So, if you WANT to wait until September for the digital-tuner UK model, okay, but for now? This is GREAT! And personally, with the analogue "turn-off" not due to START until 2008 .... well, by then technology will have moved-on, right? And maybe "blue-ray" or "HD-DVD" ????
As a REAL replacement for the venerable old VCR, this really will take some beating.
Honestly!
I looked at the "Panny" and the "Tosh", but their receiver's picture quality really was NOT as good as this. And the receiver needs to be good to record in quality.
That's the BIG Sony "plus" point.
Heh heh heh, it's so good ....... I bought TWO!
I hope others review this; it deserves praise.
A great piece of kit for an AMAZING price.

'STUNNING!'
Strengths:
Versatile.
Intuitive.
Value-for-money.
GREAT picture quality.
Weaknesses:
No English-printed manual "in-the-box".
Fan is audible (but only just).
Ummmmm errrrr no multi-region yet?
Otherwise nope! nothing else.
Overall:
What a vesatile piece of kit! Even my "technophobe" better half loves it - and she uses it FAR more than I do. It dubs quickly from HD to DVD and then plays on all my (and on my family's/friends) players! It records every day/week/month if you ask it to! Even in longer-play modes, the picture quality is GOOD even on my 32"LCD! And via prog-scan the picture is really, REALLY good!
Here we are after over 1 month of use and I'm truly surprised! I mean .... if my better half likes it SO MUCH that she made me buy another for the other room ........ !!! What can I say!
