Strengths: Good enough to reveal weaknesses in the source. Good range of inputs including optical SPDIF for a PC soundcard or music streamer; 3.5mm on the front for an MP3 player. 4mm speaker posts can take something better than bellwire. Can play MP3 cd and PC burnt CD/R. Reasonable remote. Good tone on FM and easy reception on DAB. Has 'direct' mode to bypass tone controls. Sub out.
Weaknesses: Shoe box dimensions limit placement on a shelf. Sound with supplied speakers rather 'driven' and relentless, best buy without and choose your own speakers. I went with Wharfdale Diamond IIs I had knocking about from waaayyy back. DAB channel names use only 8 characters for channel name which can't be renamed unlike FM. No way of disabling the AM radio as an input (who listens to AM?). £60 for the Ipod dock is robbery. Printed user guide doesn't mention quite a few features (DRC?) actually in the system.
Overall: Fine for the bedroom/study with carefully chosen speakers. But it ain't going to trouble an Arcam Solo...
Strengths: Solid build and feel. CD player uses decents DACs.Pretty good sound for a one box though obviously not audiophile. DAB included. With some thoughtful speaker placement, you get fair imagery.
Weaknesses: Poor speakers - I use mine with Q Acoustics 1010 mini wonders and QED Silver Anniversary XTs with airlocks and the improvement was significant. Obviously not audiophile and doesnt dig out the last bits of detail and resolution.
Overall: Simple to use and okay sound for a small listening area. Good build and CD sound is passable. Changing the speakers and using better cables is paramount.
