 | | | Posted: 10/11/06 | | 'BEAUTIFULLY BUILT LCD TV WITH STUNNING PICTURE' | | Strengths: Picture, Picture and Picture - let's be honest why else do you buy a TV? | | Weaknesses: None so far. | | Overall: After a great deal of weekend window shopping, online research and price comparison, I finally bit the bullet and opted for the Philips 32PF9731 and I have to say that I am blown away with this TV.
From the moment I opened the box and saw the perfectly laquered front panel, picked up the weighty glass table stand and navigated the gorgeous menus during setup, I knew I had made the right decision.
To understand just how good this TV is you need to see it in action, if you live in the sticks as I do, this is not easy, but when you finally get this TV lined up with the competition, you'll discover there is no competition.
The difference between this set and my existing 32" Philips Pixel Plus set has been like discovering television pictures all over again.
Don't get me wrong I loved my previous Philips TV and was constantly impressed with the quality of its pictures compared with other TVs, but my god the 32PF9731 is a revelation.
And the unbelievable news? The picture gets even better over the course of the first few days viewing.
The array of digital picture processing is impressive, and although this is not going to be to everyone's taste, the end results speak for themselves.
The Pixel Plus 3, Clear LCD and various other digital processes combine to produce images that are crystal clear, pinpoint sharp and with colours that are sumptuous yet not over saturated, whites are white and blacks are black. Fast motion is smooth with no noticeable traces of the artifacts that plague most sets.
And I haven't even mentioned the ambilight feature, this takes your TV viewing to a whole new level.
Connectivity has been well thought out, with two HDMI sockets amidst a host of other sockets including a USB socket - plug in your USB drive and you are automatically presented with a file view in much the same way you would be on your PC.
At the moment I am only using Sky digital and an upscaled HDMI signal from my Denon DVD player to feed the TV, and the results are still enough to make me grin each time I switch the set on.
On Sunday evening I watched the BBC's Planet Earth and if the picture from the standard broadcast was that good what is the HD version like? I for one cannot wait to find out.
At the full retail of £1800 this is one seriously expensive set, but shop around and you can save yourself £100's (you can buy it for around the same price as the less-well spec'd 32PF9631 - a set that just picked up What Plasma & LCD's LCD of the year award).
If you are looking for a well built, beautifully finished, feature packed TV, with great connectivity plus a picture your friends will envy (there's a reason the Hulk turns green on the ads for this TV), then make sure you audition this set (oh and the sound isn't bad too). |
